Third Grade Immigrant Experience

On March 24, 2026, Mountain Park third graders gathered and  listened to three unique speeches from immigrants representing different generations. Each speaker shared their personal story, after which third graders conducted an interview to gain insight into their lives before immigrating and some of the challenges they faced upon arrival. It was an incredible opportunity to hear firsthand accounts, bringing their stories to life and deepening students’ understanding of the immigrant experience. A special thank you to Alexander Asciukiewicz, Yiwen Xu, and Stefan Henze, our guest speakers, for taking the time to visit and share their stories with us. Mrs. Simonelli also shared an authentic suitcase once used by her family to carry clothing and personal belongings during their journey, offering students a tangible connection to the past.

Later, students enjoyed a one-hour musical about the journey of immigrants through Ellis Island at Mayo Performing Arts Center. Ellis Island served as the portal for immigrants coming into the USA from 1892 to 1954. Before its closing, an estimated 12 million people passed through on their way to a new life in America. Six professional actors in period costumes wove an intriguing tale with dialogue and songs of their experiences traveling into America. They were filled with hopes and excitement to begin new lives, with some encountering obstacles along the way. Ellis Island: Gateway to a Dream artfully told the story of how our ancestors began to call America their home. The message of hope and courage illuminated the journeys of those who crossed oceans in search of a new beginning and a place to call home–an experience our third grade students will carry with them for years to come.
