Serving the communities of Berkeley Heights and Mountainside, Governor Livingston High School has a long tradition of excellence that is bolstered by a supportive community, motivated students, and a hard-working and innovative teaching staff. It is the goal of Governor Livingston High School to provide a world class, whole child education that offers equitable opportunities for all students. As one current student explains, “Governor Livingston continues to challenge me to improve. From its rigorous academic curriculum to its limitless community opportunities, GL never ceases to push me to my full potential. The academics, ranging from advanced placement mathematics and sciences to oceanography to cooking, coupled with the extracurricular opportunities, like diverse clubs and athletics, have allowed me to freely explore my interests while simultaneously being able to strive for academic excellence and immerse myself in the flourishing school community. The Governor Livingston community, perhaps the school’s most prominent feature, is not only extremely diverse, but through its openness, acceptingness, and extension to every aspect of student life, provides a place for everyone. With students highly involved in the school community, whether through clubs, athletics, sporting events, or school functions, Governor Livingston has become a nurturing, family-like community in which anyone and everyone can pursue their interests and excel.”
In an effort to grow in the area of opportunity and innovation, Governor Livingston continues to support and develop it’s 1:1 iPad program for students and staff. This technology has proven to enhance the level of student engagement, development of higher level thinking skills and has better prepared our students for their lives in the 21st century.
Governor Livingston students have an impressive record of academic achievement in the classroom. Recognized by numerous publications as a top high school, the Class of 2018 once again earned test scores that far surpassed state and national averages. Governor Livingston students continue to excel beyond many of their peers on the SAT and ACT as well as on the Advanced Placement tests offered by the College Board. Students at Governor Livingston are able to choose from 26 AP courses over a broad range of subject areas. Ninety-three percent of all students scored at least a three or better and twenty-nine percent earned the top score possible on the national AP exams. Overall, 168 students were recognized by the college board as AP Scholars. As a result of these academic accomplishments, Governor Livingston continues to be consistently recognized as a top ranked high school in publications such as The Washington Post and NJ Monthly.
As a result, more than ninety-five percent of Governor Livingston High School graduates in the class of 2018 are pursuing post-secondary education. Recent Governor Livingston graduates attend a diverse list of prestigious institutions of higher learning which include: Bucknell University, Rutgers University, Princeton University, Columbia University, Duke University, MIT, Northeastern University, Lehigh University, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, RIT, University of California at Berkeley, New York University, Johns Hopkins, Stanford University, NJIT, and the University of Pennsylvania.
In conjunction with their high academic performance, Governor Livingston students actively pursue meaningful extracurricular and co-curricular activities and have excelled in athletics and in the arts. Supported by an active faculty and committed students, as well as various parent booster organizations, our programs help develop well-rounded students who actively seek opportunities to serve the local community and beyond. Through our honor societies and service clubs, Governor Livingston students have continued to make an impact upon their school and surrounding communities through their philanthropic efforts. It is through these service learning opportunities that our students shine as future leaders who hope to make our society a better place for all. Our Student Ambassadors, Student Auxiliary, and Interact Club, as well as numerous other student-led organizations have gone above and beyond in their service for others.
In addition to the service activities, Governor Livingston also boasts an excellent school newspaper, numerous academic teams, and numerous leadership groups. The renowned Highlander Marching Band, which has played in Scotland eight times and Disney World, has won the Atlantic Coast Championship 13 times in school history and is well known throughout the entire East coast. Our yearbook was awarded the All New Jersey Platnium Award by the Garden State Scholastic Press Annual Yearbook Contest for the 2017 Claymore. These are but a small sampling of the rewarding opportunities available to all of our students. Athletically, Governor Livingston High School has a long tradition of developing the ideals of sportsmanship and teamwork on the playing fields. The athletic program offers a total of 29 varsity sports for boys and girls with numerous teams competing on the junior varsity and freshmen levels as well. Highlights from our past season include: State Sectional Championships in Boys Tennis, Girls Swimming, Girls Track and Field and Girls Cross Country. Additionally, the Highlander Baseball Team won the Union County Championship for the second time in school history. The high levels of student participation in all of our extra-curricular activities reinforce the lessons of dedication and commitment that are important for success in our students’ future endeavors.
Overall, Governor Livingston High School is an outstanding school that continues to provide all of our students with opportunities to succeed in an ever-changing world. The district is committed to providing a collaborative environment that infuses a comprehensive curriculum with 21st century skills including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. The efforts of our teachers and students combined with the support of our administration, parents, and community, lead to a high school community where our children are able to flourish and grow into adults prepared for the challenges the future will hold. As one student summarizes, “Governor Livingston is an amazing high school that has opportunities for every kind of student. Our high level courses provide rigor for those who want it, our deaf and hard of hearing program allows for those with disabilities to strive, and our amazing athletics and clubs provide a place for everyone to fit into. GL has helped me figure out something new about myself every year that I have been here and I would not change a thing about my high school experience.”
