    June 2021

    Dear MPS Families,

Soon you will be receiving the official letter identifying your child’s school for September 2021

Over the summer, principals will be working together to determine placement for your child.  A class placement letter will be sent in early August announcing your child’s teacher and any other additional transition activities.

The summer months provide opportunities to relax, rejuvenate, and learn in new and different ways.  It also provides time to continue to practice skills learned in math and reading.   Research shows that over the summer months, students often regress in their academic competencies, hence the importance of reading and practicing math skills over the break.  With that in mind, you will receive an email from your child’s current classroom teacher containing information on summer assignments along with a letter describing a selection of reading books.

For students entering grades 3-5, the email will contain attachments with a reading list, a form for recording books your child has read, and a math packet. The math assignment may contain new material for students. Please do not worry if your child cannot complete the problems at this time. They will receive instruction and support in those concepts beginning in September.

For students entering grade 6, the email contains a summer reading assignment and links to information about the math assignment posted on the district website. Rising sixth-grade students will continue to use the digital Mathspace program.  Within each Mathspace account, your student will see a set of recommended tasks compiled by the 6th-grade math teachers containing 5th-grade skills that are considered foundational. Students will also be able to work ahead on assignments that they will be learning in September. (To log into Mathspace, students should use their email address as the username and their six-digit lunch code plus the letters “Bh” for the password. See the example below.

    Username:  asmith27@bhpsnj.org                 Password:  123456Bh

While none of the math work is mandatory, these assignments serve as a resource for students and families to maintain the growth that occurred this past school year.

Thank you and best wishes for a wonderful summer.
