In an effort to provide more opportunities for the public to interact with the Board of Education we will be conducting three ‘office hours’ sessions.  The meetings will be held on the Saturday mornings of October 27, December 8 and January 26 at Columbia Middle School from 9:00 -11:00 am.

Office hours is one of our new listening posts and is part of our broader listening strategy where residents can discuss ideas, share feedback and ask questions outside of our regular Board of Education meetings, said Doug Reinstein, BOE President.  He added, “Residents have asked for more flexible ways to share feedback and we believe this more informal setting is a great opportunity.  This is simply a chance for those who can’t make it to a Thursday night Board meeting to engage with the Board at a time that works better for many.”

So grab a cup of coffee and stop by while you’re out running a few errands.  We look forward to meeting with many of you.

Thank you, everyone, we have had a great week at MPS. It was good to see so many of you on Wednesday night. Drop off and pick up have gone especially well.  Please take a look at the recommendations to help ensure a smooth and SAFE process.
     - Remember there is no adult supervision of students prior to 8:10.
     - Do not park and remain on Mountain Ave. in the morning. Students should get out of your car on the right-hand side, step onto the sidewalk and you should depart as quickly as possible.
     - It is best not to pull into the parking lot next to the school to drop off or park unless you are coming into the building for a meeting. Students walking and cars coming and going in this small space is very hazardous.
     - If you wish to walk your child to the blacktop or observe, it is best to do so from Windsor Way.
     - Dropping off at the main entrance from the front driveway is also convenient for students. However, traffic tends to get backed up, especially on rainy days. Again, students should always get out of the car on the right-hand side and step directly onto the sidewalk.
     - In the afternoon make sure you communicate with the main office if your plans change in the last minute. If you know ahead of time please email your child's classroom teacher.  I was very impressed this week with how smoothly our children found their rides, boarded the bus and walked home in the afternoon.
Please join the PTO welcome back event tonight from 5 to 7 on the blacktop behind MPS. The food trucks that will be here are cash only.
    Please see the attachment.

In your student's first day packet, there was a flyer for membership. This flyer had directions for joining the PTO either by returning the flyer or by visiting a website and joining with PayPal. Unfortunately, the online option is not working at the moment. The PTO is working to fix this as soon as possible and I will let you know as soon as it is working. In the meantime, if you would please use the paper option we would really appreciate it. Just put your check and the flyer in an envelope marked MP PTO Membership. I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Ah, technology our best friend and greatest enemy. I hope you and your student(s) had a great first day!

Next week everyone will be receiving notice from their child's homeroom teacher regarding suggestions for activities to avoid academic regression over the summer. Please know that at any point during summer break I encourage students and parents to be in touch with me if you are interested in borrowing grade/level/age appropriate high-interest reading materials from MPS.
On the last day of school, all rising 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at MPS will NOT be receiving their 18.19 homeroom assignments. This information will be mailed home on August 2, 2018. We are monitoring class sizes closely.

Grade 5 Parents from Mrs. Fischer - As the school years draws to a close and we get ready for our students to enter Columbia Middle School, it is also time to assure their health records are current and all immunizations are up to date.  You all received a letter from Mrs. Prendeville, RN, Columbia Middle School nurse explaining the mandated additional vaccinations needed for grade 6. If your child has already received the additional immunizations required, and you have not sent me their updated immunization records, please send them to me as soon possible. Any vaccinations received over the summer must be sent to Mrs. Prendeville.
