• We are off to a great start! The students have almost mastered their morning routine (unpacking, communication folders, morning message) and have begun to build a sense of community in the classroom. We have done lots of practice to learn each others' names through poems, games, literacy and art work. The students have had the opportunity to take part in centers, some where they choose their location and groups.
Literacy: We read a number of books each day but have focused on a few for an extended period of time including Chrysanthemum, No David!, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Brown Bear. There are many activities and lessons tied in to these books and the children even have the chance to bring the stories to life using props and in our re-tell center. Look for some fun activities coming home!
Poetry: Each week we study a new poem working on repetitive text, rhyme, punctuation, and soon we will begin to learn our Word Wall Words. The students each keep a poetry book where they cut out each poem we read, practice tracking the words, and then illustrate a picture to go along with the theme of the poem. (This will be yours to keep at the end of the year!)
Math: We are beginning to learn to represent the numbers 1-5 using words, pictures, and models. We have worked in our Go Math notebooks (always a favorite with the class) and done a number of fun centers to reinforce learning. The students loved jumping on the trampoline a specified number of times!
Science: Throughout the year we will focus on a variety of topics. For now, we have begun discussing the seasons and weather and will be focusing on fall in the upcoming weeks. We will also be exploring in depth apples and pumpkins and doing some fun experiments and observations.
Social Studies: In the beginning of the year we focus on being a helpful member of a community. We have discussed how we can be our best self, how we can help others, and we spent some time learning and understanding our classroom rules:
                                           We take care of ourselves.
                                           We take care of others.
We take care of things around us.
