Arbor Day
  • In 2022, GL was named a Tree Campus K-12 School by the Arbor Day foundation, the only school in New Jersey to earn this recognition. To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Arbor Day, we planted 11 native trees at each of the six public schools in Berkeley Heights, and held student Arbor Day celebrations at four. One of these trees was a seedling from the 500-year old Salem Oak. Read more here

  • Since 2016, GL students have planted 32 native trees on campus, including 13 different species from 10 families

    The Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission, Union County Board of County Commissioners, New Jersey Department of Environment, and teachers, have generously donated these trees to the school.

    • Beech - 2 Pin Oaks, 1 White Oak

    • Birch - 3 American Hornbeams

    • Dogwood - 5 Flowering Dogwoods, 3 Black Tupelos

    • Heath - 1 Sourwood

    • Laurel - 2 Sassafras

    • Pea - 3 Eastern Redbuds, 1 Yellowwood

    • Pine - 1 White Pine

    • Rose - 2 Chokecherries, 1 Crabapple, 1 Serviceberry

    • Silver Bell - 1 Carolina Silver Bell

    • Sumac - 1 American Smoke Tree

    • Sweet Gum - 1 American Sweet Gum

    • Walnut - 1 Shellbark Hickory
