    Welcome to 5PG!

Mrs. Guerriero and Mrs. Pellegrini are so happy to be your fifth-grade teachers at Hughes School!

Find out a little bit about us:

    Marie Pellegrini

My name is Marie Pellegrini. I grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey, not far from Berkeley Heights.  I am a graduate of Holy Family Academy and Jersey City State College, now known as New Jersey City University.  I received my degrees in Elementary Education and Writing in 1993.  I taught third and fourth grades in Jersey City for 8 1/2 years only to take a ten-year childcare leave.  When my boys were in school full time, I returned to work in Berkeley Heights as a substitute and HELP teacher.  I have been with the Berkeley Heights School District since 2008. I received my M.A. in Educational Technology at New Jersey City University in May 2020. (Mrs. Guerriero and I both returned for our degrees at the same time and supported each other through the experience.  It was great to have her support!). We also completed 30 graduate degree credits beyond our Master's in the following courses: Better Teaching with Formative Assessments, Supporting Students with Disruptive Behavior, The Growth Mindset: Fostering Resilience and a Love of Learning, Understanding Dyslexia, and A Guide to Differentiating Instruction for Gifted and Talented Students.

I love to read, walk, hang out with my family, watch all sports, and I have become obsessed with watching Formula 1 racing.

I have two sons, who both traveled through the Berkeley Heights School System. My husband and I couldn't be happier with the education and love they received from their teachers and staff!  They both attended Governor Livingston High School. Nicky currently attends Seton Hall University and Tony attends Rowan University.

    Michele Guerriero

I am so excited to start another year in the Berkeley Heights School District!  I have been in the education field for the past thirteen years and have previously taught in Chatham, New Jersey before making the move to Berkeley Heights.  My greatest joy as a teacher is watching my students grow, mature, develop independence, and have fun while learning.  Seeing progress achieved, even in small increments, brings a smile to my face each and every experience!

During my childhood, I grew up in the neighboring town of New Providence.  I am a graduate of New Providence High School and Kean University (summa cum laude) where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and General Education K-6.  As an educator, it is our commitment to being life-long learners, therefore, I constantly attend many workshops and classes to further develop my craft of teaching.  Some of my favorite learning experiences have been Columbia University's Reading/Writing Summer Institute, Orton Gillingham Multisensory Reading, and Project Read's Report Form, Story Form, and Framing Your Thoughts. In 2020, I also completed my Master's Degree in Educational Instruction from TCNJ.

I currently live in Maplewood with my husband and two sons.  In fact, it is my two sons of which I contribute all my efforts and dedication to become a special educator after the age of 35!  In my spare time, I love to travel, shop and spend time with my family.  My experience as a special education parent has taught me the value of the home-school partnership as well as truly understanding "it takes a village."  I look forward to working together with my students, parents, and colleagues while making a positive impact in the lives of my students.

We co-taught for 8 years at Mountain Park School.  This will be our 2nd year at Hughes in 5th grade and our tenth year together.

We look forward to a rewarding 2022-2023 school year with your children in Room 16 at Thomas P. Hughes School!

5PG students will be working together as a team and learning many strategies to complete all assignments successfully. We also plan on having fun and enjoying our journey in fifth grade together.

This year there will also be a heavy focus on a positive growth mindset and the power of YET.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us BOTH
