How to keep the brain-sucking zombies away!

KEEP YOUR INSTRUMENT! The rental places we work with will let you keep your instrument over the summer if you are planning to return or go on to Columbia in the fall.

KEEP YOUR BOOK AND MUSIC! It's easier and more fun to play when you've got some music to play from.

TAKE PRIVATE LESSONS! You can find a teacher at Elefante Music or the Wharton Music Center. Links are on the linkspage of this site.

KEEP GOING FORWARD IN THE BOOK! Keep practicing from the last song we did together.  Remember, the new stuff is always explained in the colored boxes on the page and there's a fingering chart for notes in the back of the book.

GO TO A CONCERT! There are lots of places to hear bands, jazz bands, brass and woodwind groups- look in the newspaper or go online.

DO "MR. KAMP'S 100% GUARANTEED PATENTED INSTANT REVIEW!" Each time you practice pick one song from each page of the book starting at the very beginning. Go all the way to the last page we did together. Next time, pick a different song from each page.

OPEN YOUR EARS! There’s music all around you; whether you go to the movies, watch TV, go to the beach or mall, even playing computer games, there’s usually music. Pay attention, listen for your instrument in the whole sound, try to see what parts of music (melody, harmony, rhythm) you hear.

PLAY ANY OF THE FUN SONGS IN THE PACKET ENCLOSED! There are easy songs, challenging songs, duets, rounds and band songs. Play any and all, just for fun.

GET TOGETHER AND PLAY WITH A FRIEND! Go ahead and schedule the "musical slumber party" and do any of these activities with a group.

GO BACK AND DO THE "FLASH-NOTES" GAME! Look at the first note on each line from any page in the book. Name the note, check on how to play it, then play the note. Keep moving through these "random" notes like a flash-card game.

MAKE A PRACTICE PLAN! Set up a schedule: every day for 5 minutes, 15 minutes every other day, each night right after "Sponge Bob" is over, whatever. It will work better if you try to stick to some kind of routine, rather than waiting for your clarinet to call you, you flute to follow you, you trumpet or trombone to trip you, your drums to decide they want to be played, your sax to say "Play me!"

FIFTH GRADERS I hope you will all keep going with your music at CMS- even though the school building and the teachers will be new, music is the one place where you’ll see all your Mountain Park friends and keep doing something fun amid all the changes.

HAVE A FUN SUMMER!   4th GRADERS, I'LL SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER!
5TH GRADERS, HAVE FUN IN COLUMBIA!
MR. KAMP
