Summer Reading

June 2010
Dear Hughes Families,
Have a wonderful summer and be sure to spend some relaxing, fun time reading.  READING IS FUN!  You can meet new friends, travel to far away places, get scared with a mystery, or learn about unusual and fascinating things.
Here is a great website with some good suggestions for summer reading.  This site also has a lot to offer for family reading and how to keep up your child’s interest in reading. http://readkiddoread.ning.com/page/ultimate-summer-reading.  I think it’s worth checking out.
Use the author list on the back of this letter to get you started, but find many other things to read that you enjoy.  This list is only a suggested guide; there are so many great things to read!  Be sure to visit the Berkeley Heights Public Library and join their Summer Reading Club, where you can “Make a Splash! READ”.
For your convenience the Summer Reading Lists are available on our website.  Go to http://www.bhpsnj.org and see the link for Thomas Hughes Elementary School to view the lists online.
Have a great summer…I can’t wait to see you all again in September!
Fondly,

Mary Niedenfuhr
Hughes School Library

Summer Reading for
Students Entering Grade SixStudents entering sixth grade are to read one of the following books over the summer:
The Wanderer by Sharon Creech
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
The Boy Who Saved Baseball by John H. Ritter
Students are responsible for obtaining the books. If this is a problem, please ask your fifth grade
teacher to borrow a copy from the English supervisor before the end of the 2009-2010 school
year.
When you return to school in September, you will be assessed on your summer reading.
You should take notes as you read, focusing on plot events in chronological order, how the
characters change from beginning to end, and the author's purpose for writing the story. A good
way to do this is to write the main ideas for each chapter on a post-it.
Questions regarding the summer assignment should be emailed to Mr. Brader atmbrader@bhpsnj.org no later than June 16, 2010.
Good luck, and see you in September.
