Delayed Opening

September 9, 2008
Re: Delayed Opening – 1½ Hours

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Decisions concerning the closing of schools are made by the Superintendent of Schools after consulting with the Township Police Department, Township Road Department, and school maintenance personnel.

There are days when a delayed opening of school, rather than closing school, would allow sufficient time for students and staff to arrive safely at school. When a delayed opening occurs, we ask that you remind your children to follow all safety practices in traveling to and from school. Children riding buses should be instructed to take extra precautions while waiting at bus stops and when getting on and off buses. Please be aware that a delayed opening may be changed to a school closing if weather conditions worsen.

Delayed Opening of School Plan:                   Grades 2 – 5

The schools will be open for all grade 1-12 students exactly 1½ hours later than regularly scheduled. Since the delayed opening of school will be 1½ hours later than the normal time, the bus company will begin picking up students 1½ hours later than the regular time. For example, if the bus ordinarily arrives at the bus stop at 8:00 a.m., you may expect it at 9:30 a.m. If the bus ordinarily arrives at the bus stop at 8:15 a.m., you may expect it at 9:45 a.m.

The bus company will begin picking up the morning students approximately 1½ hours later than the normal pick-up time. For example, if the bus ordinarily arrives at the bus stop at 8:00 a.m., you may expect the bus at 9:30 a.m. If the bus ordinarily arrives at the bus stop at 8:15 a.m., you may expect it at approximately 9:45 a.m. All times are dependent upon the length of the run.

You must keep in mind that the delayed opening is caused by inclement weather that affects driving conditions. The times stated in this notice are approximate, depending on the road conditions. You are also reminded that it is expected that an adult will accompany kindergarten students to the bus stop and remain there until the child is safely on the bus.

Traffic becomes easily congested and travel delays are more common in inclement weather. Students should be reminded to allow more time for their travel. Please keep this notice in a prominent place during the next several months. Please discuss this with your child.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Judith A. Rattner
Superintendent of Schools
