Starting in September, Governor Livingston and the Berkeley Heights district will take part in the Pennies for Peace campaign. This campaign will include various activities such as literary lunches, fundraising, learning more about Afghanistan and Pakistan and teaching elementary children.
Greg Mortenson is the co-author of the #1 NY Times Best Seller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School At A Time. It recounts the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the developing world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities in central Asia. Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one
school at a time.
Our first meeting will take place next September but you can get a head start now by reading Three Cups of Tea. This is a great opportunity to participate in a service learning project at GL and we hope that you will participate. Copies of Three Cups of Tea are available to borrow from the IMC.
If you have more questions you can check out the website or contact Mrs. Ladinski or Ms. Leahy.
Have a great summer!
