Don't Forget Your Summer Reading!!!
Dear Parents,
As I spent the day in the Poconos with our eighth graders on our “famous” annual outing, I had to pause and reflect on my first days here at Columbia Middle School. I was welcomed to your community just weeks before I welcomed this group to the sixth grade. I am proud of them. As adults, we have so many distractions in our lives that it is sometimes difficult to realize that just as we are faced with deadlines, interference, and conflicts in our schedules, so too are our young people. The world is getting smaller for them as well. They need and deserve our support. It was so refreshing to see them in this different light. Without the need for hall passes and permissions, they were given the freedom to be where they wished, walk with whomever made them
comfortable, and cheer and laugh spontaneously as they watched their friends high up on a ropes course, paddle a boat, or jump in the pool. Students encouraged each other to join in to play volleyball. No one cared who was on their team, and no one wanted to keep score. As the saying on the tee-shirt goes, Life Is Good.
With less than two weeks of school left, it seems as though we still have so much to do in so little time. I know I speak for Mrs. Holzmann when I say how much we have appreciated our time with your children this year. We saw plenty of growth and positive change. The anticipation we saw on the students faces in September may now show the anticipation of summer, but they have worked hard, learned much, and a little break (with reading!) is well deserved.
We have so many partners that help us along the way, but I would like to thank our PTO for a terrific year, our Ed. Foundation for their support, and the other formal and not so formal groups and individuals who help to make Columbia Middle School such a wonderful place to work, and for our students to learn.
I sat on a log that day with some students. We were just looking at the lake, taking in the scene, when one young man said, “I’m really going to miss this place.”
Another student said, “The lake?”
“No,” he replied, “Columbia.”
Not one of them had a cell in their hand; no one had earphones in their ears. I just kept quiet and let it sink in. Nothing more had to be said.
Have a wonderful summer.
